Some problems are so obvious that you wonder why technology hasn't already addressed them. Take slow-cooling refrigerators. We sent a man to the moon in 1969, yet it still takes upwards of an hour to cool down a warm can of Mountain Dew?

Credit, then, goes to LG for introducing the Blast Chiller, a feature available on its French-door refrigerator, in stores next month, that allows you to cool a can in minutes. We were curious to know how LG arrived at this long overdue innovation.

Jangseok Lee, head of the refrigeration system team at the company's headquarters in South Korea, said the idea dates to 2002, when engineers there began thinking about how a microwave oven quickly warms up food.

Similar efforts to cool items rapidly were tried but proved unsuccessful, Mr. Lee said, and the idea was put on hold. But then LG learned about a blast-cooling process that's used in steel mills and other industrial settings.

"No one, I believe, thought this technology could be applied to small appliances," Mr. Lee said, adding that LG conducted "two years of research to apply it to the fridge." That's less than a third of the time it took us to get to the moon. Information: lg.com.

New refrigerators can cost a lot more than many families can afford, so when the time comes to get a new fridge sometimes a family benefits from selling a used refrigerator while at other times a family needing a new appliance will be looking to actually buy a used unit.  There are some definite advantages to going this route as opposed to shopping brand new at full retail prices, but there are also some potential negatives to going the used route.  Knowing where to find the best used refrigerators for sale is also a large part of deciding whether or not going used is a good idea or not.

The pros of going the used route include price.  Obviously any used refrigerators for sale, even if they are only mildly used, will be heavily discounted compared to a brand new fridge right out of the store.  Depending on how well taken care of the fridge was, there’s a decent chance that it not only works as a stop-gap but it that appliance could last several years and work just as well as a brand new model, and without having to pay hundreds and hundreds of dollars more.
