WHL playoffs: Winterhawks win 4-1 to take a 2-0 series lead over Kamloops

When the Portland Winterhawks saw Kamloops goaltender Cam Lanigan take the ice Saturday for his first Western Hockey League career playoff start in four seasons, they knew it could go one of two ways.

Either the Blazers would rally around their 19-year-old goalie and find a way to draw even in the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal series at a game apiece or the Winterhawks would pick Lanigan apart and take a 2-0 series lead.

The Winterhawks now have a 2-0 series.

Portland’s Sven Bartschi scored with 46 seconds left in the second period to break a scoreless tie and the Winterhawks added three goals in the third, rolling to a 4-1 victory before a crowd of 6,445 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Taylor Leier, Cam Reid and Bartschi scored for Portland in the third period and goaltender Mac Carruth finished with 39 saves to help the Winterhawks extend their playoff win streak to six games.
